Despite the widespread use of sunscreen lotions, skin cancer is rising alarmingly according to Cancer Research UK. About 90% of all skin cancers are UV related and it won't be long before we all know someone who has a form of skin cancer. Through research conducted by Sun Dial Laboratories, people generally assumed the SPF rating gave overall protection from the sun. In fact, the SPF rating only refers to protection against UVB rays! UVA rays are the most likely cause for Melanoma, the most deadly form of skin cancer, (x) about 1600 deaths are caused by Melanoma in the UK each year and this form of cancer is the 3rd most common cancer found in young people aged 15-24 years. Therefore, selecting a high SPF product, without UVA consideration, may increase the risk of skin cancer rather than help to protect against it.
